PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL

Il PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL è stato ideato nel 2007 in occasione della personale di Jonathan Monk presso la galleria Sonia Rosso di Torino, come omaggio ad Alighiero Boetti e al suo “One Hotel”. 

Nel centro di Kabul, all’inizio degli anni settanta, Alighiero Boetti aprì “One Hotel”, punto di ritrovo per chi si recava nella capitale e casa dell’artista quando soggiornava in Afghanistan. Tra i nomi possibili per l’albergo pensati da Boetti, poi scartati, “LIRA HOTEL” è stato scelto da Jonathan Monk, oltre trenta anni dopo per gli spazi di via Giulia di Barolo.

Inizialmente costituito da un’unica camera, tra il 2013 e il 2014, il PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL è stato ampliato con l’apertura di nuove camere realizzate daI seguenti artisti: Jonathan Monk, Scott Myles, Scott King e Jim Lambie.

Ispirandosi all’idea di una vera e propria camera d’albergo, gli artisti sono invitati a realizzare delle stanze con progetti specifici che possono prevedere strutture e installazioni oppure oggetti d’arredamento come carte da parati, divani, coperte, tavolini, lampade etc.

Soggiornare in queste camere è il modo per essere partecipi del progetto e contribuire a sovvenzionarlo: chi acquista un’edizione creata appositamente dall’artista che ha progettato la camera, acquisisce il diritto di fruire dei locali. 

Essere ospite in questi locali equivale a partecipare ad un evento in cui è richiesta la collaborazione, la fedeltà, il contributo attivo alla crescita del progetto stesso e la figura del cliente lascia il posto a quella di un collaboratore/socio che può continuare a partecipare e contribuire alle attività dell’associazione e che viene tenuto al corrente degli sviluppi e delle nuove produzioni.

Le camere sono pensate e installate come mostre da essere vissute in una maniera differente ed inusuale. Gli artisti connotano gli spazi in modo molto personale: scelgono i colori, gli arredi, i materiali, la musica. Si concedono con generosità e qualsiasi oggetto presente in queste camere narra qualcosa delle loro attitudini e dei loro interessi. Le loro stanze ospitano chi li ama e li segue da anni, ma anche chi, incuriosito, si avvicina per la prima volta all’arte contemporanea. Diverso dai normali spazi espositivi, il PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL sottolinea un’esigenza di variazione rispetto alla consueta veicolazione dell’arte contemporanea – come le mostre o le fiere – e prevede una diversa nozione di tempo lontana da una visione veloce e fagocitante: un tempo “dilatato” e senza affanno che consenta una fruizione lenta dell’opera e l’instaurazione di un legame tra tutti i partecipanti (l’artista, lo spettatore/attore, gli organizzatori).

Costantemente in divenire, gli spazi prevedono delle variazioni nel corso del tempo, incoraggiando il pubblico a tornare per partecipare ai cambiamenti. Inoltre, collezionare e raccogliere le edizioni legate al soggiorno nelle camere (anch’esse variano) fa intervenire un ulteriore aspetto legato al ricordo e alla memoria.

Così come gli oggetti, le edizioni e le opere presenti nelle camere, anche i progetti delle stanze possono essere acquistati, lasciando il posto a nuove realizzazioni.

Il LIRA HOTEL è un progetto artistico innovativo e complesso che abbraccia l’arte contemporanea, il design, l’artigianato, l’architettura e molte sono le possibilità di ricerca. Basato sulle collaborazioni tra artisti, artigiani, organizzatori, pubblico e collezionisti, tenta di creare una nuova nozione d’impresa artistica non più statica e convenzionale.

PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL was conceived in 2007 for Jonathan Monk’s solo show at the gallery Sonia Rosso in Turin, as a tribute to Alighiero Boetti and his “One Hotel”. 

In the center of Kabul, in the early seventies, Alighiero Boetti opened the “One Hotel”, a meeting place for those who went to the capital and home of the artist himself whilst staying in Afghanistan. Among the possible names for the hotel selected by Boetti, but later discarded, “LIRA HOTEL” was chosen by Jonathan Monk, over thirty years later, for the via Giulia di Barolo location. 

Initially, PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL consisted of a single room. During the years 2013 and 2014 PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL has been expanded with the opening of rooms by Jonathan Monk, Scott Myles, Scott King e Jim Lambie.

Inspired by the idea of a real hotel room, artists are invited to create spaces with specific projects that may provide structures and installations or items of furniture such as wallpaper, sofas, blankets, tables, lamps etc. 

Staying in these rooms is the way to activate the project and helps to subsidise it: the customer who buys a limited edition especially created by the artist for his room gets the right to use the premises.

To be guest in the rooms means participating in an event for which cooperation, loyalty and active contribution to the growth of the project are requested and the figure of the customer gives way to that of a collaborator/partner who is kept abreast of developments and new productions. 

Continually changing, the spaces provide variations over time, encouraging people to return to experience the changes. In addition, the collection of the room’s edition especially created by the artist also varies, which brings another aspect which is tied to remembrance and memories. 

As well as the objects, multiples and art works featured in the rooms, even the projects of the rooms themselves can be purchased, allowing for the possibility to display new realisations. 

The rooms are designed and installed as exhibits to be experienced in a different and unusual way. 

The artists characterise the space in a very personal way: they choose colours, furnishings, materials, and music. They give themselves generously and any object in these rooms tells something of their abilities and their interests. Each room is not only home to those who love them and have followed them throughout the years, but also to those who curiously approach contemporary art for the first time. Different from other typical exhibition spaces, PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL emphasises a need for change from the usual conveyance of contemporary art – such as exhibitions or fairs – and provides for a different notion of time away from today’s fast and voracious vision: a “dilated ” time and without haste, which allows for a slower appreciation of the work and the establishment of a relationship between all participants (the artist, the viewer / player, the organisers). 

PROGETTO LIRA HOTEL is a complex and innovative art project, which embraces contemporary art, design, crafts, architecture, and allows for many research opportunities. Based on the collaborations between artists, artisans, organisers, public and collectors, it aims to create a new concept of enterprise, which is no longer statical and conventional.
