Carta da parati – l’idea della carta da parati nasce da una serie di sculture che utilizzano la mia altezza come punto di riferimento- la carta da parati è esattamente lo stesso, ma a causa del procedimento di ripetizione sul quale è basata la posa della carta da parati, i segni che mi rappresentano sono dispersi in maniera discontinua nello spazio.

Sedia – lavorando con un’azienda produttrice di Bruxelles, ho proposto la continuazione della famosa sedia 1 di Enzo Mari del 1974 – i 13 componenti necessari per produrre la sedia di Mari sono stati tagliati da 13 differenti essenze di legno per 13 volte, ciascuna parte un legno differente…- questi 13 pezzi di legno sono stai poi divisi per creare 13 sedie uniche –

Tavolo – quando ero bambino usavo i Lego per costruire automobili, aerei, castelli e qualsiasi cosa che i pezzi colorati permettessero. Mio figlio fa essenzialmente lo stesso e con lui ho deciso di costruire alcuni mobili. Per realizzare i nostri disegni abbiamo incollato i pezzi di lego e li abbiamo spediti come modelli per essere ingranditi in proporzioni “umane” e prodotti in MDF come veri tavoli – i tavoli hanno ovviamente una connessione con il gruppo Memphis – i colori, le forme etc.

Tappeti – per arredare lo spazio della living room al Lira Hotel, è stato deciso che ci sarebbe stato bisogno dei tappeti per tenere lontano il freddo invernale. Ho proposto una serie di tappeti Afghani che ho alterato dipingendoli quasi completamente con uno spray. Parti del design originale può essere chiaramente visto attraverso la pittura grazie ad uno stencil (lo stencil è costituito dai bordi dei libri d’artista di Boetti e dei libri dell’Arte Povera)  che ha protetto il tappeto dalla pittura-dando la parvenza di libri sparpagliati (quadrati e rettangoli) su tutto il pavimento.

Divano- l’idea del divano mi è venuta in sogno. Sette forme di gommapiuma rivestite e unite insieme per creare il sofà. L’appoggio è una serie di lunghi triangoli che, uniti correttamente, formano lo schienale e tre larghi rettangoli di gommapiuma costituiscono la seduta – all’occorrenza, questi ultimi possono anche essere divisi per formare tre materassi. I colori sono stati selezionati pensando al gruppo Memphis e ai Lego.

I approach design/furniture/interiors in basically the same way as if  making art – 

I get an idea and try to make it into something practical – generally I only make design like objects when asked to do so – we need some wallpaper or a chair or a carpet or etc.

Wallpaper – this follows on from a series of sculptures that use my height as a reference point – the wallpaper does exactly the same but due to the repeat process inherent to hanging wallpaper the markers that signify me are dispersed unevenly throughout the space or room.

Chair – working with a producer in Brussels I proposed a continuation of Enzo Mari’s famous  Sedia 1 Chair from 1974 – the 13 components needed to produce the Mari chair were cut from 13 different types of wood thirteen times – these 13 woods were then divided up to create 13 unique chairs – each part a different wood…

Table – when I was a child I used Lego to build cars, planes, castles and anything that the brightly coloured blocks allowed. My son does basically the same and with him I decided to make some furniture.  To keep our designs together we glued the lego pieces in place and sent them as models to be enlarged to human scale and made in MDF into real tables – they have obvious connections to Memphis – colours and form etc.

Carpets – to furnish the living room space at Lira Hotel it was decided that carpets were needed to keep out the winter chill. I proposed a series of altered Afghan carpets that I spray painted almost completely.  Parts of the original design could be clearly and cleanly seen through the paint via a stencil (the outline of artist books by Boetti and books on arte povera) that protected the carpet from paint – thus giving the appearance of scattered books (squares and rectangles) across the floor. 

Couch – the couch came to me in a dream. Seven shapes of covered foam pieced together create the sofa. The back rest is a series of long triangles that when pieced together correctly form an upright and three large rectangular pieces of foam make the seat – these can also be broken down to 3 single mattresses if required. The colours were selected via Memphis and Lego.

UNTITLED AND UNFINISHED, AFGHANISTAN (2004)

Jonathan Monk ha chiesto alla galleria Sonia Rosso di seguire il seguente progetto: filmare i laghi di Band-e-Amir in Afghanistan sulle cui acque Alighiero Boetti avrebbe voluto che le ceneri venissero disperse dopo la morte. Poiché lo stato italiano non ha mai concesso l’autorizzazione, a  molti anni di distanza, Jonathan Monk ha voluto idealmente rendere omaggio a Boetti. Così, dopo una lunga ricerca è stato trovato un incaricato, Mustafa Sahibzada, in grado di raggiungere i laghi e di filmarli. Lungo il percorso, Mustafa ha anche scattato numerose foto a documentazione del viaggio che vengono qui esposte.

Le fotografie sono accompagnate da cinque film in 16 mm raffiguranti i laghi .

Questo progetto è stato realizzato in collaborazione con l’Accademia Britannica di Roma che, per l’occasione, ha pubblicato il libro Winged Mirror. Oltre all’Accademia Britannica, il progetto è stato presentato all’ICA –Institute of Contemporary Arts di Londra in occasione della personale Jonathan Monk- Continuos Project Altered Daily, 2005 e pubblicato nel relativo catalogo. Inoltre è stato presentato a Power Plant, Toronto e Kunstverein 

Hannover, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen e Kunsthalle Nurnberg in occasion di Jonathan Monk, Yesterday today tomorrow.

Jonathan Monk asked galleria Sonia Rosso to realise the following project: shoot the lakes in Afghanistan where Alighiero Boetti wanted his ashes were scattered after his death. After the death of Boetti the Italian Government didn’t allowed the desire of Boetti comes true.

During the 2004 it was find a person in Kabul (Mustafa Sahibzada) able to go in the region of Band -e- Amir lakes. All the “adventure” went well and now there are 5 films in 16mm of the lakes and every film is shown together with the photographs Mustafà Sahibzada made along the journey from Kabul to the lakes. 

In 2005 this project has been shown at School at Rome which collaborated to realise the project and published a catalogue about the project called “Winged Mirror”, British School, Rome, 2005. 

After, this project has been shown in ICA, London on the occasion of Jonathan Monk- Continuous Project Altered Daily, 2005 and published on the catalogue of the same exhibition; in Power Plant, Toronto, Canada, in Kunstverein Hannover, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen and Kunsthalle Nurnberg on the occasion of Jonathan Monk, Yesterday today tomorrow and published on the catalogue of the exhibition.
